DIY Sensory Mermaid Board

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

Mermaid sequin material seems to be everywhere these days and for good reason. It's shiny, it's visually pleasing and it feels totally cool when you run your hand over it. It's also a great tool for sensory kiddos who are seeking tactile input. I had seen the pillows before and I've seen the small boards, but I wanted something on a bigger scale for my treatment area. I couldn't find what I wanted, so I decided to take it into my own hands and DIY it. Because I'm so happy with the results, I've decided to share this very simple tutorial with you so you can add one of these amazing boards to your child's room or sensory space or even your classroom.

I started by purchasing mermaid sequin material from Amazon. There are many colour combinations to choose from and material is purchased by the yard. Once I was happy with my colour choice and my order was placed, I hit up Value Village to find a large frame. I was lucky enough to find a frame for $9.99 (not the greatest deal ever, but cheaper than buying a new frame that size).

The frame didn't match the colour theme in my treatment area, so I decided to paint it white. I removed the picture from the frame and dug around in the basement until I found white paint. I happened to have some left over chalk paint from another project, so I used that.

Once the frame was painted, I measured out my material and used my boyfriends camo Gorilla Tape to hold the material in place. It doesn't look great, but who cares? No one is going to see the backside of the board.

After the second coat of paint was applied to the frame, and it had dried, I used 3M picture hanging strips to adhere the frame to the wall and voila! that was it.

I'm so happy with the outcome of this simple project. It's really going to add to the sensory experience in my gym. And all for less than $40!
